Rob Edwards
To those who have not had the pleasure of meeting Rob Edwards, you may have learned about him in your new member education classes. For the brothers who were with us before his time, you may have met him at the Beta Tau 15th Anniversary dinner. For those who have yet to meet him, it is my honor to present the brother chosen for the 2006 Alumni interview: Rob Edwards.
Rob graduated from SIUE in 1998 and often reflects on his college days in Edwardsville, IL. Rob pledged AKL as part of the Omicron class and went on to be a very active brother. He held such positions as Rush Chair, Fundraising Chair, Treasurer, and eventually, President of the chapter. His involvement with AKL and inter-fraternal activities, such as the Order of Omega, led to him being honored in 1998 with the most prestigious undergraduate award for AKL, the Holmes Award. When asked to recall his favorite SIUE memories, he responded that most of his memories are linked to opportunities provided by AKL. Rob’s memories of his undergraduate years include: life in the “Yellow Houe” and “Compound,” taking road trips to other chapters, visits from Bill Porter and Keith Gilchrist, and the rituals that he was a part of. His fondest memory of AKL was the chapter retreat that took place at Lake Carlyle in which he felt the chapter had never been closer. Rob conveys that his years spent as an active member of the chapter helped prepare him for life after college and afforded him memories he will always treasure.
Rob went on to receive a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of Tulsa and has lived in many different locations across the U.S., including Manhattan, Kansas, Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. He recently made the move to Lincoln, Nebraska to assume the role of Director of Operations for Kenexa (www.kenexa.com) where he oversees technology and operations in the Global Survey Practices Division. In the past, he has served as the Vice President of Leadership Development for the Bank of America and as a Manager of Organizational Effectiveness for Home Depot’s Corporate Headquarters. He has received numerous personal awards in his career, as well as being a published author in The Journal of Educational Psychology.
Even with all of his personal accomplishments, what Rob cherishes most are the personal relationships he continues with his brothers of AKL. Rob commented that he is still in constant contact with Beta Tau alumni Chris Henry, Ryan Browning, Steve Farris, Greg Karcher, Mike Tripp, and even Beta Tau’s former faculty advisor, Dan Corbitt. He also mentions that the move to Nebraska yields more possibilities for alumni involvement with the Beta Tau chapter, which he is anxious to be apart of.
When asked how he thought alumni involvement could be improved, he suggested that the path is a two-way street. Rob stated that, “On the active side, the undergraduates must take in to account that alumni like to participate and continue to build the relationships that they have.” In addition he stated that, “The most important thing to help the alumni participate is to help them feel comfortable, which can be achieved easily by reaching out and having conversations with them.” He also stresses the need for early planning, as most alumni fight a battle with time commitments, either with family or career. On the other side, he emphasizes the need for alumni to provide contact information so that the actives, along with the other alumni of the chapter, can reach them.
In Rob’s eyes, the process of increasing alumni involvement can be as easy as the advice he offers potential pledges: “Make a commitment to put in as much as you possibly can and you will receive the best experience possible. No where else are you afforded an opportunity like the one Alpha Kappa Lambda can provide.”
