Why would I want to join Alpha Kappa Lambda?

"It was spring semester and my good friend, who was my roommate, transferred schools.  Because we were so close I didn't have a chance to meet very many people.  I was walking out of Prairie Hall to change a string on my guitar that had broken and I met a few of the actives at a table in the lobby of Prairie Hall.  They invited me to come hang out that weekend and by Saturday I was ready to join.  I always thought I would join a fraternity because my dad was in one, but I was too shy to make the effort of learning more about the fraternities on campus.  The guys in Alpha Kappa Lambda were very approachable and friendly.  They reminded me of my friends back home."

"I called up my friend who I hadn't talked to in years.  It turns out that he also goes to SIUE.  He invited me to a back to school concert and a party.  I decided to go out and see my old friend.  We hung out for awhile and he introduced me to several people including the President at the time.  I was then "tricked" into coming to a few of their rush week events.  I was not going to join a fraternity.   I thought fraternities were dumb.  Well, my friend again "tricked" me into joining his fraternity.  After being in it for a couple weeks I still didn't like it.  Soon after my "Big Brother" in the fraternity called me up and convinced me to actually come hang out with everyone.  I slowly started to enjoy Alpha Kappa Lambda.  If it wasn't for them I would have dropped out of school for the third time.  I have been in for 2 active semesters and have gotten so involved that I ran and became Executive Vice President.  It turns out that the fraternity was the best thing to happen in my life."

"When I met and started hanging out with guys in Alpha Kappa Lambda, I thought they were good guys in general and that Alpha Kappa Lambda had good principles. The more that I hung around and got to know everyone, I saw that everyone had good morals and that Alpha Kappa Lambda helped give them these morals. I wanted to be a part of that.......and then I found $10."

"I joined Alpha Kappa Lambda mainly because I wanted to grow upon a new family, experience new things, and meet new people. I wanted to better myself by learning how to be and eventually being a Man of Character. Though we still have many stereotypes of being a "frat boy", I left that all behind because I believed that this fraternity can and will make me a better person in and outside of school."

"I was attending SWIC and was planning on transferring to SIUE.  I had planned on joining a fraternity when I got to Edwardsville because I thought that's what you did:  You graduate from high school, you go to college, and you join a fraternity if you are a guy.  There were three guys that I hung out with every weekend that wend to Edwardsville.  When I got to Edwardsville I went to other fraternity's rush events, but I didn't feel very comfortable at the events.  Then I saw the three guys that I had spent a lot of time with before I went to Edwardsville.  They told me that they were members of Alpha Kappa Lambda.  I had no idea!  They didn't seem to me like the typical "frat guys."  They invited me out to Westport to go to the Funnybone Comedy Club.  I had a great time and it was nice knowing people there already.  I found that the brothers in the chapter were more approachable and I felt much more comfortable around them."

Why do you think that Alpha Kappa Lambda is different than everyone else?

"We are such a diverse group.  We have a wide range of personalities, interests, and hobbies.  We aren't your stereotypical fraternity.  I like the fact that we don't exclude.  You can be a jock, a dork; quiet, outgoing; a partier, a drinker, someone who doesn't like to party; someone who wants to meet a ton of people, or someone who wants to meet a few people...and still be an AKL.  But most importantly, no other fraternity on campus has Matt Woods."

-Matt Woods

"No matter what you do, you will meet someone else in AKL that likes it too.  We are so diverse.  We have different cultures and backgrounds...you will feel comfortable around us.  As different as all of us are, we all share so much.  In this fraternity we'll accept you for who you are, and we take people who are themselves.  No matter who you are, an AKL is who you were meant to be."
